Keep Leesburg Beautiful is a month-long opportunity throughout April each year for businesses, residents, and community groups to come together to make Leesburg a cleaner place for all.
Youth groups, community organizations, churches, businesses, homeowners associations, families, and individuals are encouraged to participate. Keep Leesburg Beautiful is a great opportunity for anyone who needs to complete community service hours or volunteer experience.
The two main volunteer opportunities for residents are:
- Litter Collection. Gather your friends, family, neighbors or co-workers and then select an area of Leesburg you would like to clean up or beautify. You can choose to work in your own neighborhood or choose a particular spot in town you think needs attention. Town staff can make suggestions for cleanup locations and help get permission from property owners (i.e., shopping centers) to work on their property. Join a planned event (listed below) or register online.
- Storm Drain Marker Inventory & Assessments. With over 6,000 storm sewer inlets in the Town of Leesburg, it is extremely difficult for our Inspection Staff to visually check each inlet on a regular basis. Volunteers can keep us updated on the condition of inlets in their neighborhoods and around town. By just walking your neighborhood and noting if storm sewer inlets have storm drain markers and what condition they are in, you can provide the Town with valuable information about our storm sewer system. We will provide a map with inlet locations and a checklist. Once you have completed your inventory, just email or fax us the form. If you notice inlets in need of repair, missing storm drain markers, or blocked with vegetation or trash, our Street Division will be notified to make repairs. Register online.
Keep Leesburg Beautiful Events
Here's how KLB works: The Town provides safety vests, gloves, and trash bags for litter collection efforts. Volunteers head out into neighborhoods to pickup litter or perform other clean up efforts and beautification projects. Volunteers report when and where they leave their filled bags, and the Town handles collection of trash bags and other items.
There are two upcoming events to get you started with this year's Keep Leesburg Beautiful:
W&OD Trail Cleanup Day
March 30, 2019, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
The Environmental Advisory Commission is hosting a litter clean-up event along the W&OD Trail at Raflo Park. Volunteers who want to help are invited to meet at Raflo Park, where Harrison St crosses the W&OD trail, at 10:00 am. The Town will provide safety vests, gloves, and trash bags. Volunteers are encouraged to wear sturdy shoes and to bring their own reusable water bottles. Find more information and register here: www.signupgenius.com/go/70a0445a5aa2aa0f94-kickoff.
Keep Leesburg Beautiful Kickoff
April 6, 2019, 10:30 a.m.
Join Mayor Kelly Burk and other Town officials at the kickoff of 2019's Keep Leesburg Beautiful. At the kickoff, volunteers can register to participate, select litter collection areas, and pick up supplies (trash bags, gloves, and safety vests).
Golden Trash Can Award
Each year, the Town Council and Staff hold a clean-up challenge to see which group can collect the most trash. Last year they collected a total of 1,020 pounds of trash and debris. Who will take home the coveted award this year?
