The Loudoun County Department of General Services, Waste Management Division, hosts several events per year throughout the County to help residents safely dispose of unwanted hazardous materials. Hazardous WasteHousehold Hazardous Waste is defined as items containing ingredients that could be harmful to humans, pets or the environment. These include common items found in many households, such as cleaning products, paint, and garden chemicals. Many of these products have warning labels indicating the product is hazardous and requires special disposal. These items should not be disposed of with regular household waste or recyclables. Special collection centers and events have been established to handle the safe disposal of these items. The Town of Leesburg does not collect Hazardous Household Waste items; however, Loudoun County’s Department of General Services, Waste Management Division, sponsors local events for this purpose. The following items are considered Household Hazardous Waste and should not be disposed of with regular refuse and recycling. These items should be taken to a designated Hazardous Household Waste collection event:

  • Cleaning Products
  • Driveway Sealers
  • Herbicides, Fertilizers
  • Rechargeable Batteries
  • Insecticides
  • Paint Thinner and Solvents
  • Photographic Chemicals
  • Oil-Based Paints and Stains (For Latex Paints, see information on Latex Paint Disposal)
  • Pesticides
  • Swimming Pool Chemicals
  • Unwanted Fuels
  • Wood Preservatives

The following items are not considered Household Hazardous Waste and are accepted at the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility (LCSWMF) free of charge and will be recycled.

  • Used Motor Oil
  • Antifreeze
  • Automotive Batteries

The LCSWMF is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and is located at 20939 Evergreen Mills Rd. (Rt. 621) Please call 703-771-5500 for more information.

The following items are not acceptable at HHW collection events:

  • Ammunition
  • Biological Waste
  • Dioxins
  • Explosives
  • Infectious Materials
  • Propane Cylinders
  • Radioactive Waste
  • Shock Sensitive Materials
  • Electronics
