Summary: The Commission on Public Art is seeking new color photographs that show the cultural diversity of Leesburg today. Up to 16 photos will be selected for display in the Town Hall Lobby and for use on Town website.

Project Description: Town of Leesburg's Commission on Public Art (COPA) is initiating a contest for photographs to be displayed in the Town Hall 1st floor lobby and used on the Town’s website. The available space consists of two alcoves with windows to the outside, one overlooking the Town Hall Garage Bike Mural (northeast alcove) and the other overlooking the Town Hall Green (northwest alcove). The new photography will be dry-mounted on 16” x 20” boards and displayed on the alcove walls. The photography chosen for the northeast alcove will complement the colors of the Garage Bike Mural seen through the window. The photographs must have been taken within the Town of Leesburg limits between 2017 and 2019 and must be 6000 x 4800 or a print resolution of 300.

A panel of 4 appointed artists/technical persons will review and choose up to 16 photos.

The winning artists will supply the digital images to the Town. The Town will professionally print, mount and hang the pictures in the alcoves. The pictures will be on display for at least two years and will be given to the artists at the end of the display period.

All submitted photographs will be returned to artists. Photos not selected for this call will not be used for any other purpose.

Artwork Theme: The photographs will portray the cultural diversity of Leesburg, the Leesburg environment and community at work, and the people who make Leesburg what it is today.

Artist Eligibility: This Call is open to all artists. There is no requirement that artists have previous public art experience.

Application Requirements:

  1. Only one (1) color photograph may be entered by each individual photographer.
  2. The entry shall be digital in 1000 x 800 or computer resolution of 100.
  3. Artist résumé with name, contact information, and date and location of photo.
  4. Artist statement of no more than 50 words. The brief statement should be in support of the photograph to give the viewer a full understanding of what he/she is viewing. It should inform, connect with an art context and present the basis for the work.
  5. No payment will be made for this call except receipt of the mounted photo at the end of the display.

Selection Process: The submissions will be reviewed by an advisory panel of four individuals from various fields and backgrounds including but not limited to artists, engineers, and architects who will be chosen from COPA’s Art Advisory Panel list. The panel will send the final recommendations to COPA who will review the recommendations and send the final recommendations to the Town Council for approval.
