The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) mandates strict tracking of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) under Senate Bill 138 (SB 138). 

Commercial or industrial customers discharging into the Town’s sewer system, must comply with the rules to maintain compliance and protect our public wastewater infrastructure.

Do These Rules Apply to Your Business?

You are required to follow these guidelines as your business discharges processed wastewater into the Town’s Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW). Common affected sectors include:

• Any facility manufacturing PFAS, any electroplating or metal finishing facility using PFAS, any semiconductor or circuit board facility using PFAS, any paper or packaging manufacturing facility using PFAS, and any textile mill, tannery, or leather, fabric, or carpet treater using PFAS;
• Any centralized waste treatment industrial facility;
• Any industrial launderer defined by NAICS 812332; and
• Any airport, air base, air station, fire training facility, landfill, or other facility or site that the publicly owned treatment works has a reasonable basis to believe is a source of PFAS.

Could Your Business Have Hidden PFAS?

Many commercial entities are unaware that their standard cleaning supplies, manufacturing equipment, or raw raw goods contain "forever chemicals." Before completing our PFAS Self- Reporting Form, audit your facility for these common hidden sources:

• Surfactants & Cleaners: Industrial degreasers, heavy-duty floor polishes, and specialized vehicle wash soaps.
• Machinery Lubricants: Hydraulic fluids, cutting oils, and high-temperature greases containing fluorinated polymers.
• Coating Materials: Water-repellent fabric treatments, leather protectants, and non-stick mold-release agents.
• Plating Bath Chemicals: Mist suppressants and wetting agents used in chromium or decorative metal plating.

PFAS Self Reporting form (Zero-PFAS Declaration)

If your business operates in a low-risk sector and does not use or store any PFAS-containing chemicals on-site, you may submit a PFAS Self - Reporting Form to request a waiver from active quarterly wastewater sampling.
