During Phase 3 of Virginia‚Äôs Re-opening, Thomas Balch Library will offer limited in-library research by appointment only. Research appointments must be submitted via the web form below or phone [703-737-7195] a minimum of 48 hours in advance. Research hours are limited to Tuesday 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM or Thursday 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 PM to 3 PM.  Once your appointment request is received and reviewed you will be issued a ticketed research time during one of these windows.  If you are unable to visit the library during the ticketed time, you may reschedule. Please be aware that the library reserves the right to cancel and reschedule research appointments due to staffing limitations or governmental orders.

For the safety of library patrons and staff, the following procedures must be observed during scheduled research appointments:

  • No public access to the Library building outside of pre-scheduled appointments.

  • Appointments limited to ticketed time with no appointment extending beyond two hours.

  • Researchers must wear a mask covering their nose and mouth at all times while at the Library (Bring your own mask).

  • Researchers must wash their hands / use hand sanitizer upon entering the library, before handling library collections, and as directed by library staff.

  • Social distancing guidelines (see CDC guidelines ) must be maintained at all times whilst at the Library. Researchers must stay in designated areas and follow staff direction.

  • No groups will be allowed in the library.

  • These temporary guidelines are in addition to all other Library policies.

Research requests for onsite visits need to be as specific as possible. Due to limited staffing and access to collections, requested materials will be pulled in advance.  Materials will be quarantined after use; some materials may not be available.
