Treesburg Initiative: Growing Leesburg’s Urban Canopy One Yard at a Time
Treesburg is a Town‑wide initiative led by Leesburg’s Tree Commission and Urban Forestry Program, designed to expand the Town’s urban tree canopy by increasing tree planting on residential property. As part of this effort, the Tree Commission hosts biannual tree giveaway events each spring and fall, where residents can pick up a free native tree along with expert planting and care guidance.
Participants are encouraged to add their new trees — whether acquired as part of a tree giveaway or purchased elsewhere — to an interactive GIS map. This tool allows residents to track the growth of their own trees while also exploring new plantings across town. The map helps the Town monitor canopy expansion efforts and highlights the important role private property plays in growing Leesburg’s urban forest.

How to Participate:
Want to help grow Leesburg's tree canopy and create Virginia's greenest community?
Follow these steps:
1.) Plant a tree! Follow these simple steps for caring for your seedling or visit the Arbor Day Foundation's tree planting guide.
2.) Show us where you're planting your tree. Scan the QR code or click here: https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/38e2af0617c24f4d953936f329273811
3.) Tell us what you planted and upload a photo
That's it! Your newly planted tree will show up on the Town's GIS map along with countless trees from your neighbors. Each year on or around Arbor Day, snap a new photo, scan the QR code again and upload the latest picture of the tree.
Trees will be distributed annually by the Leesburg Tree Commission and partners at the Flower and Garden Festival and at Treesburg events. Please remember to enter your tree planting on the GIS map!
Remember, planting a tree is not the end of the relationship. Studies have shown that a weekly watering for the first 2 growing seasons gives a new tree significantly greater chance of survival. So please water your new tree often.
