The Leesburg Police Department’s Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) program is a valuable public safety tool used to help prevent and investigate crime, locate missing or endangered individuals, and identify stolen vehicles. ALPR technology captures images of license plates—not people—and the data is used strictly for legitimate law enforcement purposes in accordance with Virginia law and department policy. Safeguards are in place to protect privacy, including limited data retention, restricted access, and regular audits, ensuring the program enhances community safety while respecting individual rights.
