About the Unit
The Leesburg Police Department’s K-9 Unit enhances public safety by deploying specially trained police dogs and their handlers in support of patrol and investigative operations. The program is designed to strengthen operational effectiveness while maintaining high standards of training, professionalism, and animal care.
LPD K-9 Unit History
Police K-9 units originated in Europe in the early 20th century and were later adopted by U.S. law enforcement agencies as a proven tool for tracking, detection, and officer safety. Over time, K-9 programs have evolved into highly specialized units supported by advanced training standards and modern veterinary care. Today, K-9 teams remain an essential and trusted component of effective policing.
The Role of the LPD K-9 Unit
K-9 teams consist of a sworn officer partnered with a trained police dog. They assist with narcotics detection, suspect tracking, locating missing or endangered persons, evidence searches, and support during high-risk incidents. Handlers complete extensive training to ensure safe, effective, and accountable deployments.
