About the Program
The Leesburg Police Department’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Team provides advanced aerial support to enhance public safety, situational awareness, and operational effectiveness. The program uses small, remotely piloted aircraft to assist officers in a safe, efficient, and responsible manner while adhering to all legal, privacy, and regulatory standards.
The Role of the Team
UAS operators are specially trained and certified to deploy drones during a wide range of incidents. The team supports search and rescue operations, missing person cases, crash and crime scene documentation, disaster response, and high-risk incidents by providing real-time aerial imagery. UAS technology allows officers to assess scenes from above, locate individuals more quickly, and make informed decisions while reducing risk to both officers and the public.
How We Help the Community
By improving visibility, response time, and officer safety, the UAS Team enhances the department’s ability to protect life and property. The use of aerial technology allows for more effective operations with fewer resources, helping resolve incidents efficiently while maintaining transparency, accountability, and respect for community privacy.
