The Town of Leesburg Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to offering residents of all ages and interest’s broad based recreation and leisure opportunities that will foster the growth of healthy lifestyles. With a wide variety of programs, the young and the young at heart are encouraged to regularly participate in recreational classes and programs. Whether you are a nature buff, gymnast, or a patron of the arts – you are sure to find a class to further your education or spark your creativity.
Cupcake Decorating
(Ages 7-13) Ready to have a fun and yummy time? Come and learn how to decorate cupcakes in creative ways. Students will decorate with icing, fondant and lots of other fun treats! Class meets at OIWPB.
Guitar Basics & Intermediate
(Ages 8 & up) If you are brand new to the guitar or would like a refresher, this course specializes in adult and youth beginners on acoustic guitar. You will learn about the instrument, how to play various chords, and get comfortable playing with others. Participants are expected to bring their own guitar.
Astronomy 101
(Ages 8 & up) Constellations, planets, and moons can be seen in the sky. This class will introduce you and your child to the basics of astronomy including commonly used terms, how to use a basic telescope, what stars are rising and setting, and the phases of the moon. Class time is split with indoor presentation followed by outdoor observation (weather permitting), so please dress appropriately. If cancelled due to inclement weather, the class will be held the following week from the original scheduled date.
Art Exploration
(Ages 6-10) Kids will have a chance to embrace their artistic side. Trying a variety of crafts, their creative curious minds will love exploring so many ways to express themselves.
Clay Creations
(Ages 6-12) Students will learn basic sculpting methods by forming simple shapes and putting them together to form more complicated figures.
Paint with Acrylics
(Ages 7-10) An engaging class where young artists explore the basics of drawing, painting, and creativity. Perfect for building confidence and discovering the joy of art!
Mindfulness Practice via Chinese Calligraphy
(Ages 13 & up) Chinese calligraphy is far more than elegant brushwork – it is a profound mindfulness practice rooted in centuries of tradition. This beginner-friendly course is designed to introduce participants to Chinese calligraphy including the four treasures and the various calligraphy styles, practice the eight fundamental strokes, master characters of your choice, and collaborate with the teacher to come up with a meaningful project that you can showcase to your friends and family. Guided by an experienced instructor, each session will provide hands-on practice using traditional tools, such as the brush, ink, and rice paper. No prior experience or Chinese language knowledge is necessary. Come and join us to learn an art form, while practicing mindfulness, regaining your peace and harmony.
