Medicare

Are you approaching the age of 65? Then it's time to think ahead about Medicare. If you or your spouse will turn age 65 this year, you will want to become familiar with how Medicare enrollment rules could affect you.

Enroll in Medicare Part A (Hospital) and Part B (Medical) on time, which means contacting Social Security three (3) months before you become entitled to Medicare to begin the enrollment process. Enrollment can be completed online by visiting www.medicare.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or schedule an appointment at the nearest Social Security Office.

The effective date of your Medicare coverage is tied to the month you (or your spouse) turn age 65, and when you sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B.

Resources & How to Get Help

  • Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 or apply for Medicare for information about your Medicare eligibility and to sign up for both Part A and Part B.
  • Visit the Medicare website for general information or enroll online in less than 10 minutes.
  • Call the Town of Leesburg Human Resources Division at 703-737-7178 for questions about how Medicare enrollment coordinates with the Town’s sponsored retiree coverage.

Medicare Basics

Medicare covers certain medical services and supplies in hospitals, doctors offices, and other health care settings. Your Town sponsored Advantage 65 Plan helps provide coverage for services and supplies that are not covered by Medicare.

Important Reminders

The Town of Leesburg requires you and your Medicare eligible dependent(s) to enroll in both Medicare Part A (Hospital) and Part B (Medical), when you first become eligible to qualify for enrollment into the Town of Leesburg’s coordinated supplemental plan; Advantage 65 with Dental/Vision. Note: Pharmacy benefits will transition over to a Medicare-approved Part D drug plan called Humana Group Medicare.

You will receive a letter about three (3) months prior to becoming Medicare eligible advising you to provide a copy of your Medicare Part A and Part B card to the Town of Leesburg Human Resources Division. Additionally, you will be mailed enrollment forms and given instructions on how to complete and return them to the Human Resources Division. Please note, Medicare coverage does not include prescription drug benefits. It is very important that you do not enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan. Your prescription drug benefits are included under the Town’s Plan through Humana Group Medicare® Prescription Drug Plan.

Please provide a copy of your Medicare ID card to the Human Resources Division within 45 days of your Medicare coverage effective date. Failure to do so may result in termination of your group health coverage. If coverage is terminated as a result of your failure to comply, you will not be eligible later to reinstate coverage.

Once your coverage transitions to Advantage 65 and Humana Rx, you will receive new ID cards for both your medical and prescription drug coverage. Please provide a copy of your new Medicare card to all your medical providers. Let them know that Medicare is now your primary plan and that the Advantage 65 (KA 65) plan is secondary.
