Project Description:  The Town has completed monitoring of the Potomac River for compliance with Round 2 of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR Round 2). The EPA created this rule to increase protection against microbial pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia in public water systems that use surface water sources. Recent monitoring of the Potomac River detected Cryptosporidium oocysts. The Town’s existing water treatment process removes these pathogens. This project addresses regulatory requirements that are associated with the presence of Cryptosporidium and adds an additional process to remove pathogens through a multi-barrier approach.

Project Updates: The construction contract was awarded to EMH Environmental, Inc. in June 2023. The project is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2026.
