IMG_7847Leesburg, VA (April 2, 2019) - Over 80 Leesburg residents gathered at Raflo Park in downtown Leesburg on Saturday, March 30, for a morning of litter collection on and around the W&OD Trail. The event was hosted by the Town’s Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) in effort to publicize the “Keep Leesburg Beautiful” campaign, which officially began April 1, 2019.

Volunteers included local Cub Scout Pack #965, Girl Scout Troop #4255, teachers, families, current and former members of the EAC, and Town Council members Marty Martinez and Neil Steinberg, as well as current Tolbert Award honoree Fran Grozer.

During a period of two hours, volunteer groups removed nearly 380 pounds of trash, 160 pounds of tires, and 40 pounds of construction debris stuck in rocky riverbeds, tangled in tree branches, and despoiling the bike path. It was one of the most highly-attended “Keep Leesburg Beautiful” volunteer events in recent memory.

The EAC hosts and supports events and activities throughout the year and invites groups and individuals who are interested in participating. The committee meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the 2nd floor conference room at Town Hall (25 West Market Street). The public is welcome to attend.

“Keep Leesburg Beautiful” is a month-long campaign taking place each spring that encourages residents, community groups, and businesses to get involved in cleaning up the Town. Mayor Kelly Burk will hold the official Keep Leesburg Beautiful kick-off on Saturday, April 6, at 10:30 a.m. at Raflo Park. Please visit www.leesburgva.gov/KLB for details about how to volunteer.
