Leesburg Police Warn of New Phone and Online Scams

Post Date:11/30/2018 4:45 PM
Leesburg, VA- The Leesburg Police Department has received multiple reports of what the FBI has labeled  “Purchase Order Fraud”.   Scammers contact local small businesses online and by telephone claiming to be U.S. government and higher education entities looking to purchase bulk amounts of tech hardware such as laptop computers, tablets, and external hard drives.  The scammers then provide the businesses with fake purchase order numbers promising to pay after 30 days, but they never pay.

Any business that has been contacted by suspected scammers should look for common indicators of a scam which include misspelled words and poor grammar.

Anyone who believes that they may be a target of this or a similar one is encouraged to contact the Leesburg Police Department at 703-771-4500 or his or her local law enforcement agency as well as the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://www.ic3.gov/.

The FBI has documented this scam in more detail at: https://www.fbi.gov/news/stories/purchase-order-scam-leaves-a-trail-of-victims.
