Leesburg, VA (August 25, 2026) – Thomas Balch Library will host Priscilla Godfrey for a presentation exploring the remarkable contributions of James Monroe, one of Virginia’s most influential statesmen. The presentation is  scheduled for 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3.

The program will trace Monroe’s development from his formative experiences in the Revolutionary War to his extensive diplomatic service, including as ambassador to Paris under President George Washington. Monroe’s later national leadership, including his presidency, helped to define America’s early direction on foreign policy and national identity.

Monroe described the Revolution as a formative force in his life, writing later: “Though young at the commencement of our revolution, I took part in it, and its principles have invariably guided me since. Nothing can be more deeply fixed in the judgement and heart of anyone than are the principles of our free system of government in mine.” Godfrey will explore the experiences that helped him develop this perspective, providing a meaningful lens to understand Monroe’s public service and lifelong dedication to the ideals of the new nation.

A nationally certified quilt judge and longtime western Loudoun resident, Godfrey is widely recognized for her lectures on local and regional history. Since 1979, she has contributed to Loudoun County through decades of public service, including eight years on the Loudoun County School Board. Godfrey is a frequent lecturer for universities, public libraries, quilting conferences, and historical organizations. She has spoken at George Mason University’s Fairfax and Reston campuses, all nine Loudoun County Public Libraries, and the American Quilt Study Group’s 2025 conference in Portland, Maine.
