Leesburg, VA (June 30, 2026) – The Leesburg Police Department is reminding residents and visitors that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) for the Special Flight Restriction Area (SFRA) in conjunction with Independence Day activities.

The TFR will go into effect at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, and includes a vast majority of Leesburg, including Ida Lee Park and the surrounding festival and fireworks areas. During the restriction, no recreational or commercial drones may be operated within the restricted airspace. The only drone flights permitted are those specifically authorized by the FAA, including those conducted by the Leesburg Police Department.

Even before the TFR becomes effective, federal regulations prohibit drone operators from flying over people. With thousands expected to attend Independence Day events throughout Leesburg, operating a drone over crowds is prohibited and creates unnecessary safety risks.

"The safety of everyone attending our Independence Day celebrations is our top priority," said Chief Thea Pirnat. "We ask drone operators to leave their drones at home and enjoy the festivities from the ground. These restrictions are in place to protect the public and ensure emergency responders can safely perform their duties."

Unauthorized drone operations may result in enforcement action by federal authorities, including civil penalties and potential criminal prosecution.

The Leesburg Police Department also encourages everyone attending Independence Day events to remain aware of their surroundings. If you see something, say something. Report suspicious activity immediately so law enforcement can respond quickly and appropriately.
