Splotch Monster Exhibit on Display at Leesburg Town Hall
Loya’s exhibit features a collection of “splotch monster” paintings, a creative series he began in 2009 in which he transforms watercolor paint “splotches” into imaginative creatures. Each piece begins as an abstract shape that inspires a new character and the possibility of a story waiting to be told.
“That’s the beautiful thing about art. It doesn’t have to be entirely based in fact to draw attention to something that is real,” said Loya. “Plus, it was a great opportunity to experiment with the juxtaposition of visual forms, as well as present opportunities for imaginary stories yet to be told.”
The Splotch Monster exhibit will be on display through the end of August. The public is invited to view the artwork in person during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Learn more about Loya’s work at https://www.splotchmonsterisland.com/.
In addition to his Splotch Monster series, Loya is known for his mixed-media artwork, which blends realism and abstraction. His recent work focuses on non-objective acrylic paintings and collage. When he is not creating art, Loya enjoys exploring interesting places throughout the DMV and beyond, including nature trails, museums, unique towns, record and bookstores, and music venues. He resides in Sterling, Virginia.
The first-floor lobby and hallway of the Leesburg Town Hall feature rotating exhibits by Leesburg and Loudoun artists. Those interested in having their work considered for a future exhibit should contact Leah Kosin, staff liaison to the Commission on Public Art, at lkosin@leesburgva.gov.
