Tree City USA LogoLeesburg, VA (April 17, 2026) – The Town of Leesburg has been recognized as a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The Town first earned this designation in 1989 and has received it every year since.

To qualify as a Tree City USA community, the Town must meet four requirements: maintain a tree board or commission, adopt a tree-care ordinance, invest at least $2 per capita in forestry, and observe Arbor Day.

In addition, the Arbor Day Foundation has honored the Town with a Growth Award, recognizing Leesburg’s commitment to advancing its urban forest program beyond Tree City USA standards. The award reflects the Town’s efforts in tree planting, preservation, long-term planning, and public engagement.

The Tree City USA and Growth Award ceremony, presented by the Virginia Department of Forestry, will take place on Saturday, April 18 at 1:30 p.m. during the Town’s 36th Annual Flower and Garden Festival.

As part of its ongoing commitment to urban forestry, the Town will also celebrate Arbor Day in partnership with the Leesburg Tree Commission through a series of community events, including a tree planting at Harper Park Middle School on April 28.

On April 29, a commemorative tree planting will be held at Ida Lee Park as part of the America 250 Arbor Day celebration. The Town will plant a chestnut oak sapling propagated from stock at George Washington's Mount Vernon, symbolizing the community’s connection to the nation’s history and its ongoing commitment to stewardship of the urban forest.

The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. More than 3,500 communities have made the commitment to becoming a Tree City USA. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
