Countess of Loudoun DisplayLeesburg, VA (April 3, 2026) – The public is invited to a new exhibit at the Thomas Balch Library celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Countess of Loudoun’s Bicentennial visit to Loudoun County, Virginia.

The exhibit highlights the 1976 visit of Barbara Huddleston Abney-Hastings, thirteenth Countess of Loudoun (1919–2002), the first holder of the title to visit Loudoun County. The county itself was named for John Campbell, fourth Earl of Loudoun (1705–1782), a Scottish peer.

Curated by Charles Johnston, the exhibit draws on materials from the Thomas Balch Library’s collection to document the countess’s visit from April 15 to 21, 1976, part of Loudoun County’s Bicentennial celebration of American independence. Visitors will gain insight into the visit’s historical significance and its connection to the county’s namesake.

The exhibit will be on display at the Thomas Balch Library through Sunday, May 31 during regular library hours: Monday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday from 2 to 8 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
