Virginia Flood Awareness Week Is March 8-14, 2026

Post Date:03/09/2026 12:00 PM

Leesburg, VA (March 9, 2026) – Virginia Flood Awareness Week, a statewide effort to inform residents and property owners about flood risk and flood insurance, is March 8-14, 2026. Flood Awareness Week

In observance, the Town’s Community Development Department and Office of Emergency Management & Security are sharing resources regarding the safeguarding of properties, floodplains, and floodplain management.

The Town’s Citizen Preparedness Guide offers hazard mitigation and preparedness planning tips. The guide is available in both English and Spanish and can be found online at https://www.leesburgva.gov/residents/emergency-preparedness/citizen-preparedness-guide.

The Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) has an online map that shows floodplain locations within the United States with an option to input a property address: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/homehttps://hazards-fema.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8b0adb51996444d4879338b5529aa9c

A video is available from FEMA that discusses flood variables and defining flood risk at https://youtu.be/oi2g-0GfgMk.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) provides the Virginia Flood Risk Information System (www.dcr.virginia.gov/vfris), an online tool  Virginians can use to learn about the risk of flooding to their homes, businesses, or community.

Residents and property owners are encouraged to consider flood insurance. To help determine a property’s flood risk, individuals can contact an insurance agent at a participating National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provider (www.floodsmart.gov). Since the Town of Leesburg participates in the NFIP, Town residents are eligible for flood insurance, even if they do not live in a high-risk flood zone. Flood insurance policies often take a minimum of 30 days to go into effect so residents and property owners should consider whether to pursue coverage well in advance of a disaster.
