Leesburg Celebrates Historical Visit of Marquis de Lafayette

Lafayette PortraitLeesburg, VA (August 1, 2025) – Throughout the month of August, the Town of Leesburg will proudly commemorate the 200th anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s historic visit on August 9, 1825, when he toured the young United States as “The Nation’s Guest.” 

This bicentennial celebration offers a unique opportunity to honor a key figure in American history and reflect on the enduring ideals of liberty, friendship, and democracy that Lafayette championed.

A variety of exhibits and events are planned throughout the month to educate, inspire, and immerse the community in Lafayette’s legacy:

• Historians on Tap
Friday, August 8 | 6:30 p.m. | Dynasty Brewing | 21+ 
Join local historians Travis Shaw, Joe Rizzo, and Annemarie Chirieleison for an engaging and informal evening discussing fascinating stories about Lafayette. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Program begins at 7 p.m. Ages 21 and older. Valid ID required.

• Lafayette Family Day
Saturday, August 9 | 10 a.m.
Enjoy a family-friendly day of historical reenactments and hands-on activities at Loudoun Museum, Donaldson Log Cabin, and Mervin Jackson Park. Meet interpreters portraying Lafayette, President James Monroe, and historic Leesburg residents.

• Main Bicentennial Celebration at TASTE Leesburg
Saturday, August 9 | 6 p.m. | Downtown Leesburg
Experience a dramatic recreation of Lafayette’s 1825 visit, featuring portrayals of Lafayette, President James Monroe, local dignitaries, and patriotic music. This signature event is part of TASTE Leesburg, which combines food, entertainment, and community celebration.

• Lafayette Discussion at Oatlands
Sunday, August 10 |2 p.m. | Oatlands
Join a reflective discussion on “Hero of Two Worlds” exploring Lafayette’s life, his American tour, and the lasting significance of his visit to Loudoun County.

In addition to these events, complimentary exhibits highlighting Lafayette’s life and impact will be on display throughout August at the Thomas Balch Library and Loudoun Museum.

The Town’s Department of Economic Development will also distribute 40 decorative wreaths, adorned with French and American flags, to local businesses across Leesburg. Set to go out on August 6, the wreaths will enhance the Town’s atmosphere and evoke the spirit of Lafayette’s 1825 visit, helping to create a sense of place that reflects the historic occasion.
