Leesburg, VA (July 24, 2025) - Thomas Balch Library will host Historic Records Manager Eric Larson as he presents “Making Loudoun’s Historic Records Available to the Public” at the library at 10 a.m. Thursday, August 7.
The presentation will be held in person in the library’s lower level conference room, as well as virtually.
Recognizing the value of rare and valuable historic records in the Loudoun County Courthouse, Gary M. Clemens, the Clerk of the Circuit Court, developed a vision to create a formal historic records program in 2002. Clemens requested funding for this initiative in the County’s proposed Fiscal Year 2004 budget. The Board of Supervisors authorized this additional funding and, by July 2004, the Clerk’s Office hired the first deputy clerk position assigned to this program. Since July 2004, Clemens has requested additional funding from the Board of Supervisors resulting in a team of three deputy clerk positions assigned to the Historic Records Division. Clemens’ vision of expanding preservation efforts, enhancing public access to valuable Loudoun history, and providing educational programs using these precious records is being realized today.
Larson will give an overview of one of Virginia’s largest and best-preserved collections of historic court records dating back to the founding of Loudoun County in 1757. He will discuss conservation treatments, digitization of records, and how to use the collection in research.
