Leesburg Town Council Declines County Request for Church Street Closure

Post Date:07/22/2025 5:00 PM

Leesburg, VA (July 22, 2025) – The Leesburg Town Council has declined a request by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors to permanently close Church Street between Market and Cornwall streets to vehicular traffic.

The Council discussed the County’s requested closure of Church Street during a closed session at the Council’s Monday, July 21, work session. The Council reconvened in open session to state the Council’s direction to Mayor Kelly Burk to draft a letter to the Board of Supervisors indicating that the Town has denied the request to close Church Street.

“We recognize this is not the outcome the County was hoping for, and we want to emphasize that the Town Council values its long-standing partnership with the Board of Supervisors. While we were not able to support this request, we are hopeful that the County will explore alternative solutions that address safety and operational concerns while maintaining the public nature of the roadway,” Mayor Burk stated.

The vote to keep Church Street open passed unanimously.
