Leesburg, VA (April 9, 2025) – On Tuesday, the Leesburg Town Council and Environmental Advisory Commission (EAC) Chair Paul Sheaffer presented the Earth Care Team of Leesburg Presbyterian Church with the 2024 Tolbert Award for Environmental Stewardship. This award recognizes outstanding contributions to sustainability and conservation within the local community.
Since becoming an Earth Care Congregation in 2022, the Earth Care Team, led by co-chairs Laura Renauld and Kathy Brown, has implemented impactful sustainability initiatives. The church has made significant accomplishments in waste reduction, replacing single use communion cups with reusable glass, and by establishing a food waste composting program on site. To further reduce, the group transitioned to BPI certified compostable tableware for church events that could be included in the food waste composting program.
The team has also improved the church’s energy efficiency by installing LED lighting and roof insulation in the historic 1804 sanctuary. Beyond the church, they participate in annual litter and river cleanups and plant pollinator gardens that support wildlife and provide flowers for nursing home residents. Their Annual Earth Care Fair promotes sustainability by featuring educational displays, demonstrations, and activities aimed at eco-friendly lifestyle changes.
Nationally recognized by the Presbyterian Church USA, the team has also educated preschoolers on composting and recycling. Their efforts to maintain the church’s Earth Care Congregation status include monthly Earth Care Sundays featuring conservation-focused worship messages and hands-on projects. This spring, they will plant a certified “Backyard Habitat” on Market Street, creating a public space for environmental education and reflection.
"The Earth Care Team’s leadership in sustainability sets a strong example for the community," said the Town’s Sustainability Manager Deb Moran. "Their efforts make a lasting impact on Leesburg’s environmental future."
The Tolbert award recognizes students, community groups, and individuals that conduct or participate in activities that benefit the Town’s environment. Such activities are vital to sustaining the quality and health of our community and significantly contribute to the long-term wellbeing of our Town for generations to come.
