Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and their Hill Top House Book Talk

With Lynn Pechuekonis

Join us at the library for a book talk on the Hill Top House Hotel. The hotel was for generations a beloved Harpers Ferry destination, yet few guests knew that it was founded in 1890 by African-Americans Tom and Lavinia Lovett. Learn about their challenges and successes as operators of a segregated whites-only resort during the early decades of the Jim Crow era.

Our speaker, Lynn Pechuekonis, is a historian and author residing in scenic Harpers Ferry. After a lengthy career in communications at the University of Virginia, she returned to her home state and became fascinated with the historic achievements of Black residents there. Among the Mountains: The Lovetts and Their Hill Top House is her second published biography.  Her first book, Man of Sterling Worth, explores the life of Professor William A. Saunders, the longest serving Black teacher at Storer College. She lives in the Saunders home one block away from the former college and operates a small bed and breakfast there with her husband Christian. She frequently gives talks and tours on Harpers Ferry Black heritage, covering Reconstruction through Civil Rights.
