The historic Town of Leesburg, Virginia was established in 1758 and is located approximately 35 miles northwest of Washington, DC. The Town serves as the center of government and commerce for Loudoun County, one of the nation’s fastest growing counties. Leesburg’s Old and Historic District (OHD), listed on both the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places, is known as one of Virginia’s most well-preserved and picturesque downtowns.
As growth has occurred outside of the OHD it has assumed a conventional suburban development pattern, including successful strip and big box retail, isolated residential, warehousing, and industrial uses. Policies recently adopted by the Town envision an extension of the fine grained mixture of uses and pedestrian-friendly development pattern predominate in areas bordering the downtown.
To reach this goal, Leesburg recently adopted a Master Plan to address future development in an area known as the Crescent District, which has seen a large amount of suburban-style development adjacent to the OHD. The Master Plan was recently the basis for revisions to the Town Plan and provides guidance for building heights, street design and location, architectural design, and land use.
