Inspired by Town Council’s commitment to “protect and enhance tree canopy…” as well as continuing the efforts of the Town’s Environmental Policy Statement and Leesburg’s Tree City USA status, the Department of Capital Projects Management (CPM) has established the Tree Preservation and Replacement Guidelines for Capital Improvement Program Projects. This is a stewardship initiative that is incidental to the overall construction cost of a project, but aimed at protecting Leesburg’s existing tree canopy.
Joining forces with the Department of Planning & Zoning, and the Town’s Tree Commission, a comprehensive set of Guidelines was established to maintain a zero net canopy loss, as well as aid CPM staff in promoting environmentally sound designs, and help citizens make informed decisions.
Highlights of the Guidelines include:
- designing “bump-outs” and/or reducing road width in design plans
- use of special construction material
- protecting trees on private property as well as those in the right-of-way
- requests for tree removal within a three-year period
- offering trees to property owners fronting a right-of-way where appropriate
