America’s 9/11 Foundation holds an annual commemorative motorcycle ride in remembrance of all who lost their lives in the September 11, 2001 attacks, aftermath and recovery. The ride travels from Somerset, Pennsylvania to the Pentagon, then to the site of the World Trade Center in New York City. On Friday, August 19, 2011, the motorcycle procession will travel through Leesburg beginning at about 2:00 p.m.
The ride will go south on Highway 15 Business into Leesburg, continuing southbound on King Street through the Historic Downtown. Riders will then take the Route 7/15 Bypass east to the Dulles Greenway, where riders will enter the Dulles Greenway and travel to the Pentagon.
More than 1,800 motorcycles are expected to participate in this year's ride. During the procession through town, King Street will be closed to all traffic. In addition, all King Street intersections will be closed to east-west cross traffic, both vehicular and pedestrian. The road closures are expected to be in effect for several hours. For more details about the ride route, road closures and recommended detour routes, including a map of the route, please visit www.leesburgva.gov/index.aspx?page=1472.
Riders could arrive in Leesburg as early as 2:00 p.m., however this time is dependent on weather, construction, and other traffic conditions.
