Mayor of Leesburg, Kristen UmstattdLeesburg Welcomes You

As the Mayor of Leesburg, I am proud to welcome you to the Town during this very important time in our history.

Whether you have been a resident of Leesburg for decades or days, I welcome you to this very special place. During the distance of time since it was founded in 1758, Leesburg has been home, a business location or a vacation destination for some very important people, not the least of which are residents like yourself. Notable visitors to Leesburg include Francis "Lightfoot" Lee, whose family was honored in the very naming of our town, and Thurgood Marshall who, along with other attorneys, tried one of the landmark legal battles that led to Brown v. Board Education, the Supreme Court case that ultimately struck down segregation. Among our former residents we count General George C. Marshall, Army Chief of Staff during World War II, Secretary of State under President Truman, architect of the Marshall Plan for the recovery of war-torn Europe and Nobel Peace Prize recipient. It is this rich history, keen sense of preservation and lively sense of community that marks Leesburg's special place in history from 1758 to today as we launch into our 250th Anniversary celebrations.

Over time Leesburg has transitioned from a colonial village of 60 acres along Virginia's western frontier to a community that is complex, cosmopolitan, and diverse. Along this important continuum of time, Leesburg has preserved its natural beauty, charm and historic architecture as well as its sense of community, hospitality and progressive thinking. We are proud of this place we call home.

Throughout 2007 and 2008 and beyond, I encourage you to become reacquainted with your community. There are a host of opportunities to participate in special events and programs that will recharge your spirit and enrich your senses. Encourage your family and friends to return to Leesburg and Loudoun County to experience this special time with you if they once lived here and have moved away. We're happy you're here, and are certain you will enjoy all the events throughout 2007 and 2008.

Kristen Umstattd, Mayor of the Town of Leesburg

Scott K. York, CharmainCome Celebrate Loudoun County With Us

What an exciting time to be in Virginia, and especially right here in Loudoun County. This year we celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown, and the 250th Anniversary of our own county’s founding. Plans to commemorate these milestones are underway, and we look forward to a year-long schedule of programs, legacy projects, educational experiences and many other events.

Loudoun County’s 250th anniversary celebration presents us all with a unique opportunity to become part of the fabric of our community. We are blessed to live in an area of striking physical beauty: mountains, rivers and creeks, acres of open countryside, historic small towns and farms, and forward-looking planned communities. This year, we’ll get to know Loudoun County and its past, and gain a new appreciation of our own place in this marvelous community.

I am delighted to invite you to bring your family and friends to Discover, Experience and Celebrate the treasure that is Loudoun County, Virginia. Please explore these pages for interesting stories about how our home came to be, and see the ever-growing schedule of events for ideas about how you can participate in Loudoun County’s 250th anniversary celebration.
